01 — the cloth

Why indigo, why denim?

Indigo doesn’t soak into the yarn — it settles on the surface, layer by layer. That’s why it looks so deep, and why it fades. And denim’s twill weave was made to be sat on, pulled at and washed.

01
DepthEvery dip in the vat adds another layer of blue. On raw denim the layers come close to black; on chambray they open into a pale sky.
02
StrengthTwill was born for workwear. It’s at home on a chair cushion, a floor cushion, in a house with kids.
03
AgingWhere it rubs, it lightens. Two years in, your cushion knows which corner you lean into. We call that a record, not a flaw.

UPVOTERED + UPVOTEBLUE

Table and shelves from red. Textiles from blue.

UPVOTERED makes tables, shelves and lamps in wood and metal. We sew what goes on, under and next to them. One measuring system, one drawing language: the seat cushion fits the chair, the rug fits under the table.

table + shelf (red) + seat cushion + rug (blue) = a room

08 — care

Three rules. The rest is character.

  1. First washes: alone and cold

Inside out, cold water (below 86 °F / 30 °C), on its own.

  2. Keep it off pale surfaces at first

Dark denim can leave a little blue on white upholstery and light fabrics.

  3. Fading isn’t a fault

Sun and friction lighten the color. If you want it even, keep it out of the sun.

Why indigo ages well

Indigo fades. That's not a flaw, it's how the dye works. Here's why, and what to do in the first few weeks with a new piece.

Denim at home: from jeans to the sofa

Denim was made for miners and workers. The same qualities make it a good fabric for sofas, curtains and floor cushions today.

11 — questions

Frequently asked

All questions →
Why is there no cart? How do I order?

Because we sew most pieces to your size, fabric and finish. Pick a model, set it up and hit “Request a quote”. We reply with a price and a lead time; once you confirm, we start cutting.

Why aren’t prices on the site?

Size, fabric and quantity change the price directly, so we’d rather send you a real quote than a ballpark. Quotes are free and non-binding.

Can I see the fabric first?

Yes — order a sample kit of up to 6 fabrics. It costs $15 with free US shipping, and the $15 is credited toward your first order. Indigo never looks the same on a screen as in your hand, so hold it up to your own light.

Does indigo rub off?

At first, especially with dark denim, some color can transfer onto light surfaces. Wash separately in cold water for the first few washes and keep it off pale upholstery for the first weeks. It settles over time. Details on the care page.

Can you reupholster my own chair or sofa?

Yes. Upload photos and measurements with the quote form. We choose the fabric together; pick-up and return are free within Greater Boston (about 25 miles from the studio), further afield we quote them.

12 — get in touch

Got a room in mind?

Tell us briefly what you’re after — a size, a fabric or a photo is enough. We’ll reply with a price and a lead time.
